I’ve had this cute little tree/topiary thing on my entry table forever. I like it, but I’m bored with it. So, I decided to make my own DIY Moss Ball Topiary…perfect for Halloween! And I’ll easily be able to use it with my fall decor, too, once Halloween is over. You know me, always thinking about the future…planning, organizing… Oh wait. No. No, that’s not me.
So as if I didn’t already have a million and one projects to finish, I went to the dollar store in pursuit of supplies. A teeny, tiny, short little trip to the dollar store…seems harmless, I know. But this happened…
And this is only about half of it. I’m not sure how it happened. I think I blacked out. (That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!) Looks like a pile of stuff from the dollar store, right?? Well, just you wait!
The dollar store is one of my very favorite places to shop for holiday decor. I hardly ever use the same theme or style of decor two years in a row so if I’m going to buy new stuff every year, I have to keep it cheap. Halloween is by far one of my favorite holidays to decorate for and I found a ton of great stuff this trip…including the supplies to make my new topiary.
This is what I started with. I found the glass candlesticks and the dried moss at Dollar Tree for- you guessed it… $1 each.
The foam balls are from Wal-Mart and were 97 cents a piece. The paint I already had. It was on sale at Ace for $2.50.

To start, I just glued the moss onto the foam ball in small sections using a hot glue gun.
This is also a great way to remove your fingerprints if you ever find yourself in a sticky situation where having fingerprints just isn’t working out for you anymore. Kidding! Just turn yourself in.
But seriously, be careful! It’s really easy to burn yourself while attaching the moss if you’re not.
I covered the whole ball, except for where I was going to be gluing the candlestick.
Once the ball was covered, I cut off the longer, straggler pieces.
I made two of them.
Once the balls were done, I painted the candlesticks. If watching paint dry isn’t your idea of a good time, you could always paint your candlesticks BEFORE you start on the moss balls. Novel idea, right?!
The color I used is called Navajo White. I did two coats.
Once the paint was dry I just glued the ball to the top of the candlestick with the hot glue gun.
To attach the two balls I used a small wooden dowel. I just stuck it into the bottom ball and then pushed the other ball on top. The foam is pretty soft so it was really easy.
That’s it! And for less than $5! I might even add one more ball to make it taller.
I got the skeleton, the small black frame, and the black “Creepy Cloth” from the dollar store, too!
Thanks for stopping by!
